President Kim Dae-jung will hold a New Year press conference in mid-January next year to disclose plans on managing his last year in office. This past year was one in which there were far too often, unjust people chasing others around like dogs, somehow assured that they were just in their pursuit.
It seemed to start when the Taliban destroyed those stone Buddha figures in Afghanistan's Bamian Valley in the name of "truth." Men like these have not the slightest doubt that they are the embodiment of truth and justice. Maybe their faith really gives them the basis to think this,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it means something when, after they ran from Kabul,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], women and children took off their repressive headwear and shouted for joy. These characters were just another oppressor armed with their own sense of justice, even though ultimately you could see that they had no monopoly on this whatsoever.
In Korea as well, hostility dressed as justice itself had a field day. With a mind reminiscent of those who "burnt down the house of Yi Gi-bung," they unfurled the flag of "justice" and "reform" as they cried out for their own jihad. Now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], however,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it turns out to have been about something else. It was literally the "smell of money" that made it embarrassing to see them talk about justice and reform. Maybe they will say they needed 'political funds' to carry on the democracy struggle, but I've never heard any story about Nelson Mandela moving piles of cash around with a fire shovel "for the sake of democracy."
The very people who scolded the military regimes for their networking of government and big business got in bed with some very rich venture capitalists. The very same government that takes pride in digging at the truth about the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of Tsche Chong-Kil, tried to again cover up the truth about the Suzy Kim affair. This was a generation that grew up knowing what happened to Dr. Rhee Syngman's adopted son, Yi Gang-seok, and yet they have been tied down by issues relating to the son of another president. They yelled "medical reform" and sent the health insurance system into bankruptcy. They shouted "educational reform" and made teachers into people,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who the recipients of that education started turning in to the police.
What is it, then, that takes someone who is fully confident that he is a "warrior for justice" and turns it into another failure and twisted result? The ultimate conclusion might have to be that the moment one says "I am justice incarnate,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," you lose your own mission of justice. Just as the phrase that says all are "sinners" before god,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a true sense of being just should include a sense about when to feel shame and a sense of humility. Without this, that "justice" becomes self-righteousness and egocentric. When that sense of justice starts to make you think you have a monopoly on being right, you pick out those who are different or oppose your views for thorough hostility, and as people to be purged. You even begin to think the purging is part of a noble mission. This is what leads to the kind of thinking that says the people who died in the World Trade Center had it coming, and are in no need of pity. This self-assuredness of being just looks like a perfect belief system, but in actuality it is extremely dangerous and can invite destructive repetitions of failure. The more a society achieves normalcy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the harder it is for people to get away with wearing "justice" as their own exclusive title.
And so it is my hope that in the New Year we would meditate on having purity of mind, rather than allowing anyone to try "monopolize" being right. When justice and any other noble ideal begin to possess people, it becomes a disease instead of a value to be upheld. In Korea and elsewhere, there are way too many signs that too many people are possessed in such a way. I'm not talking about the ghosts of scandal-gates, kickbacks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or apple boxes full of money,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but that feisty ghost of the justice cult. 2001 was a year when this ghost possessed our society and laid waste to everything in its path. It is time to look inside ourselves as the year comes to a close, and wash ourselves of that which has possessed us.

The March 2006 issue of the Harvard Business Review had a great article by Robert Morison, Tamara Erickson, and Ken Dychtwald entitled "Managing Middlescence." Their article addressed the mid-career employees, aged 35 to 54,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who "should be at their peak of productivity," but instead "are the most disaffected segment of the workforce." With one in four of these employees holding managerial or supervisory positions, this is a problem we as employers need to be aware of and act on.
So why are these employees dissatisfied with their careers, burnt-out,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and generally feeling as if they're in dead-end jobs? According to the authors' and other research, these individuals are often responsible for raising their children,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], (from first and second marriages),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],caring for aging parents, helping their twenty and thirty-something children meet expenses, and looking at their own limited retirement nest-eggs. Because they're not "star" performers, they are often overlooked by senior management and grouped together as a single category of "middle management" so their individual skills, dreams,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and desires are lost. In addition, according to the study, this group has the lowest satisfaction rates with their immediate managers and the least confidence in top executives. I believe that last finding is stunning,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], insightful, and as an employer, a cause for reflection and action.

Second, we need to start communicating clearly -- throughout our entire organization -- what our organization's vision of success is and how each individual employee and his or her position feeds into that vision. Ensure each employee understands where and how he or she fits in to the Plan and keep repeating that message until everyone knows it and "gets it."
1. First, re-evaluate how and where we focus our energies. If yours is like most organizations, we focus most of our energies on the top 10% of employees and the bottom 10%. We woo the top and try to "fix" the bottom. We need to look at this logically. The top 10% don't need that much time from us as they're already self-starters,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], driven,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and frankly they'll resent too much "guidance." We simply need to point them in the right direction, provide them with the resources they need, be available, and let them perform. The bottom 10% are probably not a right fit for us and we're not a right fit for them. So if we've made an honest effort in helping them gain the skills they need to succeed with our organization and it's not worked, face the fact that it probably never will and let them go. The middle 80% have been left alone as they're doing what we expect. However, "left alone" has turned into "ignored."

3. Third, start focusing on creating a pool of qualified candidates for every position in your company. Why only focus on a few "star" employees and base your organization's future on them? Why not focus instead on developing your pool of middle managers to become a more skilled, more engaged, and more productive group overall? Meet with your middle managers and supervisors to hear from them what challenges they see to this proposal and what ideas they have to make it happen.

To be able to jump on that jet plane and set off to sunnier and quieter climes. It’s all too easy to do, however when you actually get to your destination you find that you are surrounded by like minded people and their families, therefore, the escape is no longer there. The Lake District is an area of natural beauty, it’s somewhere where many people have heard of but never made the journey to come and see. Each and every time there is something new, the villages are all so pleasant and welcoming. Somewhere you can feel at ease and breathe easy. The air is so clear and so is the water. The surroundings just blow you away. To be able to take a stroll by the lake and enjoy locally produced food is a luxury to behold. So where is this fabulous destination? Simply put Cottages Lake District. Would behaviour be displayed that is deemed inappropriate for small children? Is it a risk worth taking? Well in my opinion no. I would much rather go somewhere where I feel myself and my family would feel safe, have the same home comforts but in a different location,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where can all enjoy each other’s company without feeling rushed, being able to take in the atmosphere without the noise.
I learned that lesson the hard way,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not mention an expensive way too. In the end I think I spent most of my time jumping on trains and busses in a feeble attempt to escape the noise,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the noise I had worked so hard to avoid. Well this year I’m choosing something different,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], something quainter that won’t apply to the youth of today who have recently discovered alcohol! It’s not that I don’t like children as I have three of my own, it’s the generation who have come of age to who can drink,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and or rather think they can drink. Therefore my destination of choice avoids this.
